Speaker of Milli Majlis meets Head of Legislative Assembly of Kingdom of Tonga

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has had a meeting with Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Kingdom of Tonga Lord Fkafānua Fatafehi, the press service of the Milli Majlis reported.

Greeting the guest who had arrived in our country for the Parliamentary Meeting that the Milli Majlis and the Inter-Parliamentary Union are co-organising on the COP29 sidelines on 16-17 November, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova shared her thoughts about that event’s significance.

It was stressed that the problems caused by climate change affected all the countries; the immense importance of global co-operation in that regard was underscored.

Then, they discussed the co-operation between Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth of Nations as well as the humanitarian and technical assistance extended via that organisation to Small Island States.

Lord Fkafānua Fatafehi said that the Small Island States encounter climatic unfairness before he pointed out that climate change was a security issue with them. According to him, the assistance of new friends like Azerbaijan is of immense importance in adapting to climate change. The guest also expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan's prioritisation of the voices of small island states within COP29, elevating them to a higher level. As he hopes, both the COP29 and the discussions due at the Parliamentary Meeting will be productive and make a significant contribution to addressing climate change issues.

Next, they talked about the bilateral relations and recalled fondly the visit to our country of the Kingdom of Tonga Prime Minister and the inking of the Baku Declaration.

There was also an exchange of views upon co-operation opportunities between our legislatures.

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova provided the guests with thorough information about the situation in the region, the Azerbaijani realia and the work that our country is doing in her de-occupied territories.
