Executive Director: Before Baku Initiative Group, world community was unaware of some colonies

“Since its Chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Azerbaijan has coordinated its activities in accordance with the fundamental principles of this international organization,” said Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), as he addressed the 35th session of the United Nations (UN) Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, launched at the UN headquarters in New York, AzVision.az reports, citing AZERTAC.

Emphasizing that support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries is a fundamental principle of the movement, the Executive Director also noted that one of the main goals of the establishment of NAM was to make a substantial contribution to the decolonization process. According to him, regions affected by the colonial policies of France and the Netherlands engaged in a wide exchange of views at the summits and conferences held during Azerbaijan’s Chairmanship. He underlined that the Baku Initiative Group was created on the initiative of colonies at one of such conferences in Baku.

Abbas Abbasov also underscored the pressure faced by the BIG, its members, people residing in colonies, and the supporters of independence.

“This is quite natural because before the establishment of the Baku Initiative Group, the world community was unaware of the existence of these colonies and had no access to detailed information about the heinous colonial activities carried out in these regions. The information became available to the world community following international conferences held by the BIG at the UN, along with reports submitted to the relevant bodies,” the Executive Director added.
