Hikmet Hajiyev: EU Mission in Armenia must cease its activities

“It is a concerning fact that a third state has deployed forces on the border between the two countries. Azerbaijan has repeatedly stated this. We see no reason for the deployment of a European Union (EU) mission on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border,” said Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, to journalists, AzVision.az reports.

Noting that the European Union mission in Armenia must cease its activities, Hikmet Hajiyev added: "It was agreed in Prague with the participation of the President of Azerbaijan, French President Emmanuel Macron, President of the European Council Charles Michel (former President - ed.), and the Prime Minister of Armenia that the mission would be short-term. However, as we see, the mission is becoming an ongoing process, with its composition and even its geographical mandate being expanded."

“If the delimitation and demarcation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia is being carried out based on mutual understanding and peace, we do not see the need for the presence of a third force, nor for its composition to be increased with military forces or expanded. Therefore, the consolidation of peace is a process that is directly between Azerbaijan and Armenia and is bilateral in nature. On the contrary, the presence of a third force on the border between the two countries only serves to exacerbate the situation, with the emergence of the European Union as a military factor in the South Caucasus as a whole,” the Assistant to the President concluded.
