20 January tragedy victims commemorated in Rome

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Italy has hosted an event commemorating the 35th anniversary of the 20 January tragedy.

The ceremony started with a minute of silence for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

Addressing the event, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Italy Rashad Aslanov highlighted the pivotal importance of the 20 January tragedy in terms of country’s regaining its independence.

The Azerbaijani diplomat noted that on January 20, 1990, the Soviet army rolled on Baku and the regions to stifle the national liberation movement and committed a grave crime against the civilian population, as a result of which 150 civilians were killed.

The ambassador said that on January 21, 1990, following the tragic events, National Leader Heydar Aliyev went to the permanent representative office of Azerbaijan in Moscow, expressed his solidarity with the people of Azerbaijan, giving a political assessment of the January 20 tragedy.

At the initiative of the National Leader, the first document providing a political and legal assessment of the 20 January tragedy was adopted by the Milli Majlis (Parliament).

The event concluded with the screening of a video highlighting the January 20 tragedy.
