The ceremony started with a minute of silence for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. The participants laid flowers at the monument.
In his remarks, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Sweden Zaur Ahmadov noted that on January 20, 1990, unarmed Azerbaijani people struggled against tanks and heavy military equipment, demanding their independence. The diplomat said that as a result of the Soviet army's shooting of innocent civilians, 147 people were killed, while 744 others were injured.
"Today, we also commemorate with deep respect National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who went to the permanent representative office of Azerbaijan in Moscow on January 21, 1990, following the tragic events, and strongly condemned this crime. At the initiative of the National Leader, the 20 January tragedy was given a political and legal assessment in 1994, and 20 January was declared the National Mourning Day," the diplomat underlined.
The ambassador emphasized that the holding of the commemorative event in front of the "Non-Violence" sculpture in the center of Stockholm holds a symbolic meaning, indicating that the Azerbaijani people have always been peace-loving.
