On 19 February, the Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament), Sahiba Gafarova, met with the Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis (Supreme Assembly) of Uzbekistan, Tanzila Narbayeva, who had arrived in Azerbaijan to attend the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), held in Baku, AzVision.az reports citing the Milli Majlis.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova described Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan as friendly and brotherly nations united by common history and cultural values. She emphasized that bilateral relations continue to develop successfully under the leadership of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The closeness of the countries is evident in political, economic, cultural, and other spheres.
During the conversation, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis thanked Tanzila Narbayeva for accepting the invitation to take part in the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) hosted in Azerbaijan.
Gafarova noted that the advancement of relations between the two countries against the backdrop of complex political developments in the world serves the common interests of peoples. The friendship between the heads of state plays a significant role in further strengthening mutual ties.
According to her, Uzbekistan’s construction of a school in Azerbaijan’s liberated Fuzuli district is highly valued in the country and stands as a testament to the fraternal relations between the two nations.
The Azerbaijani speaker expressed her satisfaction with the successful development of cooperation between the two parliaments and highlighted the special role played by inter-parliamentary friendship groups within the legislative bodies of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva voiced her gratitude for the invitation to the APA session.
Narbayeva noted that Azerbaijan’s achievements under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev are impressive. She underlined that initiatives undertaken by Azerbaijan have a global impact.
Uzbek Speaker praised the high-level organization and execution of such a significant international event as COP29. She also announced that Uzbekistan will host the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and expressed confidence that an Azerbaijani delegation would participate in the session.
Narbayeva said that the warm personal relations between the leaders of the two states had a positive impact on parliamentary cooperation. The language and cultural proximity of the nations provide a strong foundation for further deepening their interaction, in her opinion.
Tanzila Narbayeva stressed that Azerbaijan’s experience within the Non-Aligned Movement is of great significance for Uzbekistan as well.
Important steps were taken towards the institutional development of the Non-Aligned Movement during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the organization, and these initiatives have a global impact.
The meeting also had an exchange of views on other matters of mutual interest.
