Armenian government is not interested in establishing peace: Western Azerbaijan Community

“Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, in his speech at the High-Level Segment of the 56th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on February 24, 2025, made statements that condone a group of war criminals currently on trial in Azerbaijan, contradict the concept of human rights, and hinder peace efforts in the region,” the Western Azerbaijan Community said in a statement, AzVision.az reports.

“First of all, it should be noted that Minister Mirzoyan’s attempt to undermine the judicial process concerning those held responsible for committing the Khojaly genocide—carried out by his country on February 25-26, 1992—on the anniversary of this genocide is an act of disrespect to the memory of its victims.

Additionally, Ararat Mirzoyan's raising the issue of Armenians who have voluntarily left Azerbaijan and attempting to involve UN human rights mechanisms in this matter is yet another example of hypocrisy. The primary responsibility of Armenia in the field of human rights is to create conditions for the peaceful, safe, and dignified return of Azerbaijanis who were forcibly expelled from Armenia.

We would like to remind the Armenian government, which frequently refers to the 1991 Almaty Declaration, that after signing this declaration, Armenia expanded its attacks against Azerbaijan, occupying 20% of the country’s territory and subjecting nearly 800 000 Azerbaijanis to ethnic cleansing. Peace is not achieved by referring to documents but by taking concrete steps. Armenia’s rapid militarization and failure to fulfill its obligations to ensure unimpeded transit do not contribute to peace.

All these facts once again prove that the Armenian government is not interested in establishing peace and respecting human rights. As the Western Azerbaijan Community, we demand that the Armenian government put an end to its non-constructive policies, create conditions for the safe and dignified return of expelled Azerbaijanis to their homes in Armenia, and take the necessary steps for peace,” the Community added.
