The first political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan and Suriname took place during the visit of the Azerbaijani government mission to Suriname, led by Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elnur Mammadov, on March 3-5, AzVision.az reports citing Azerbaijan’s MFA.
The mission included representatives from the Ministries of Economy, Energy, Science and Education, Agriculture, as well as the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), and AzerGold CJSC.
During the visit, Elnur Mammadov met with Suriname's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation, Albert Ramdin, and Deputy Minister, Miriam MacIntosh.
The visit was a result of the meeting between President of Suriname Chan Santokhi, who visited Azerbaijan in November last year as part of Azerbaijan's presidency of COP29, and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan. The discussions covered various topics of mutual interest, including high-level visits, cooperation opportunities in investment, transport, green energy, humanitarian efforts, science and education, culture, and other potential areas.

They discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral and multilateral political relations.
Elnur Mammadov also made a presentation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Suriname on Azerbaijan's foreign policy priorities and gave an interview to the Suriname state media agency CDS.
Meetings with senior officials of relevant government agencies of Suriname were organized for the members of the Azerbaijani government mission. Detailed presentations on investment opportunities in various fields and substantive discussions on cooperation prospects were held.
