Azerbaijani FM highlights the need for global cooperation to address missing persons issue

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with Kathryne Bomberger, Director-General of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), to discuss the ongoing efforts to locate Azerbaijanis who went missing during Armenia’s military aggression and occupation.

During the meeting, Minister Bayramov highlighted that around 4,000 Azerbaijanis, including civilians, women, and children, disappeared in the early 1990s. He emphasized that Azerbaijan has been actively working to raise international awareness on this issue, organizing conferences since 2023 and engaging the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Persons.

Bayramov stressed the importance of global cooperation in resolving this humanitarian issue, noting that clarifying the fate of missing persons is not only a matter of justice and the rule of law but also crucial for post-conflict reconciliation. He pointed out that 23 mass graves have been discovered in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories so far, while the ongoing landmine threat continues to hinder search efforts.

Both sides also discussed broader areas of cooperation and mutual interest.
