International conference participants visit Khudaveng monastery

Participants of the international scientific conference titled "Protection of Ancient Human Settlements: Threats and Modern Approaches" organized by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Culture visited the Khudavang Monastery Complex in Kalbajar district.

The Khudavang Monastery, an ancient architectural treasure of Azerbaijan and a religious site from the Caucasian Albania era, boasts a history exceeding a millennium. Its basilica dates back to the 8th–9th centuries, while the Arzu Khatun Church was constructed in the 13th century, as highlighted during the visit.

The delegation learned that this globally significant architectural monument suffered vandalism during Armenia’s occupation from 1992 to 2020. Under the pretext of “restoration,” illegal alterations were carried out with the backing of the Armenian Church and funding from the Armenian government. Modifications bearing clear signs of falsification were added to the Arzu Khatun and Hasan the Great churches, as well as other structures within the complex.

The international scientific conference brought together scientists, researchers, experts from numerous countries, as well as representatives of international organizations in the relevant area.
