Azerbaijani Deputy FM attends Climate Week in Panama

An Azerbaijani delegation led by Yalchin Rafiyev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, COP29 Lead Negotiator, attended mandated events and the high-level plenary session on the margins of the Climate Week, taking place in Panama City, the capital of Panama on May 19-23, organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

During the high-level plenary session held on May 21, the Azerbaijani Deputy FM highlighted the events held during Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency, the landmark decisions adopted at COP29, particularly the Baku Finance Goal, setting a new global target to channel $1.3tn of climate finance to developing countries by 2035, including a new core finance goal of $300bn that triples the previous $100bn target; as well as achieving the full operationalization of Article 6 of Paris Agreement on carbon markets, thus breaking through longstanding multilateral negotiations stalemate.

As part of the visit, Yalchin Rafiyev held meetings with Simon Stiell, UNFCC Executive Secretary, Ana Toni, COP30 CEO, and Liliam Chagas, COP30 Lead Negotiator.

The discussions revolved around Azerbaijan’s progress made during the COP29, the country’s activities and expertise in this field, the importance of implementing the decisions adopted during COP29, the 62nd sessions of the UN Climate Change Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) scheduled for June to take place this June, as well as climate negotiations to be held during COP30.
