“We are all in the same boat. We must move together toward a safer shore. If the boat sinks, we all drown. But united efforts make it unsinkable,” said Ibrahim Najm, Secretary General of the Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, addressing the international conference “Islamophobia in Focus: Unveiling Bias, Shattering Stigmas” in Baku.
Najm highlighted a key challenge: in the Western world, the term “fatwa” is often misunderstood and associated with the death penalty. Non-Muslims frequently perceive it as a punishment or death sentence.
“There must be public education about fatwas. We live in an era overflowing with information but lacking wisdom. Fatwas are simply advice and are not legally binding. They play an important role in combating Islamophobia globally,” he said.
He stressed the need to empower young scholars to communicate accurate knowledge about Islam from influential platforms. “Organizing online courses and amplifying our voices to reach broader audiences is essential in the fight against Islamophobia,” Najm concluded.
