Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Julien de Fraipont, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Azerbaijan.
The meeting underscored the broad opportunities for advancing bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Belgium. Both sides highlighted the visit of the Belgian Prime Minister to Baku during COP29 last year and his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev as a testament to the growing importance of bilateral ties.
Speaker Gafarova expressed Azerbaijan’s interest in deepening interparliamentary cooperation with the Belgian Parliament and recalled her previous meetings with former Belgian parliamentary leaders. She emphasized the value of reciprocal visits and sustained dialogue in strengthening ties, also noting the important role of parliamentary friendship groups.
Ambassador Julien de Fraipont praised the warm hospitality he has experienced in Azerbaijan and stressed the significance of the Belgian Prime Minister’s visit, both for participation in COP29 and for advancing bilateral discussions. He pointed out the favorable foundation for expanding cooperation in key areas such as economy, transport, logistics, and maritime affairs.
The Ambassador also emphasized Azerbaijan’s crucial role in ensuring Europe’s energy security and voiced support for strengthening the EU-Azerbaijan partnership.
Speaker Gafarova briefed the Ambassador on regional developments, including large-scale reconstruction and development efforts in the liberated territories, Azerbaijan’s continued demining initiatives, and other pressing issues.
