Final declaration adopted at conference dedicated to Guadeloupe

A final declaration was adopted at the international conference titled “Towards the Decolonization of Guadeloupe! Challenges and Perspectives”, held in Baku and dedicated to the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe.

The statement was read by Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group.

The declaration reaffirms the right of all peoples to determine their political status and choose their development paths freely, as outlined in the UN Charter and Resolution 1514 on decolonization.

It stresses that Guadeloupe remains under French control as an overseas department, hindering its people’s full self-determination. The document condemns historical injustices, including the extermination of the Kalinago people, slavery, and ongoing socio-economic inequalities stemming from colonial structures.

Participants called for recognition of historical truth, revival of local language and culture, institutional reforms, and fair reparations. They urged the UN and relevant international bodies to reinstate Guadeloupe on the list of non-self-governing territories and support its decolonization process.

The declaration emphasized the importance of international platforms such as the Baku Initiative Group in promoting global decolonization dialogue and pledged solidarity with all peoples under colonial rule.
