 1st summit of the Union of Ski Resorts of Turkic-Speaking States hosted in Shahdag

The 1st Summit of the Union of Ski Resorts of Turkic-Speaking States kicked off at Shahdag Tourism Center on 12 July, supported by the Union and the Organization of Turkic States with the aim to stimulate mutual development of mountain and winter tourism, establish cooperation and promote mountain resorts within the union, which share cultural, historical and geographical values.

The summit participants at Shahdag Tourism Centre included officials of the Organisations of Turkic States and Azerbaijan State Tourism Agency, as well the heads and representatives of mountain resorts of Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Türkiye and Kyrgyzstan. The partakers aim to contribute to the development of ski tourism, exchange best practices and boost the prospects and competitiveness of mountain tourism in Turkic-speaking states.

AzVision.az reports that the speakers at the official opening ceremony included Rustam Najafov, the Union Chairman, Mirvohid Azimov, Deputy Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States and Kenan Guluzadeh, Advisor to the Chairman of the State Tourism Agency.

The first day of the summit comprised various panel discussions after the opening ceremony. The first session was dedicated to infrastructure development, innovative approaches and cooperation opportunities at mountain resorts of Turkic States. The heads of Shahdag resort in Azerbaijan, Shymbulak in Kazakhstan, Uludag in Türkiye and Armisoy in Uzbekistan addressed the session.

The second panel discussed the elimination of the seasonality factor at mountain resorts and boosting cooperation on the matter. The third panel addressed the promotion and prospects of winter sports, while the fourth focused on education, training and employment in tourism.

The day concluded with a memorandum on establishing the Club of Skier Journalists of Turkic-Speaking States and delivering union membership certificates to the participants.

The second day of the summit, 13 July, will lunch the exciting Shahdag Running Fest, where 600 amateur athletes from Turkic-speaking states and several European countries will compete over three distances – the Shahdag Trail (54 km), the Laza Trail (27 km) and the Zindanmuruq Trail (9 km).
