UN congratulates Azerbaijan and Armenia on historic peace declaration

In a significant move toward regional peace, the United Nations has extended its congratulations to Azerbaijan and Armenia following the signing of a "Joint Declaration" by President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

In a letter addressed to President Aliyev, Vladanka Andreeva, the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, hailed the agreement as a "historic milestone" for normalizing relations between the two countries. The declaration is seen as a major step toward fostering lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus.

"The United Nations strongly supports all efforts aimed at advancing peace, dialogue, and confidence-building in the region," Andreeva wrote. She commended both leaders for their "courage and leadership" in pursuing a peaceful resolution to long-standing issues.

Beyond the peace declaration, the letter also highlighted the UN's commitment to its partnership with Azerbaijan. Andreeva noted that the next UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2026-2030 is currently being developed in close collaboration with the Azerbaijani government. This framework, she explained, will support the nation's priorities, including inclusive socio-economic development, climate action, and sustainable peace.

Andreeva concluded her message by reiterating the UN's ongoing support for Azerbaijan, with a particular focus on ensuring that the voices of women and youth are at the center of peace and development efforts.
