Meeting held in Nakhchivan with the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus

On August 30, Fuad Najafli, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, met with a delegation led by Magdalena Grono, the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus.

During the meeting, Fuad Najafli noted that as a result of Armenia’s long-standing occupation policy, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic was cut off from the mainland of Azerbaijan, with land transportation links severed. He highlighted that over the years, the transportation infrastructure, including the railway system, in the occupied territories was destroyed. In this context, he stated that the results achieved in normalizing relations with Armenia promise significant prospects for the region.

Fuad Najafli emphasized that Nakhchivan, rich in natural resources, is implementing major projects in renewable energy, logistics, and tourism sectors, underscoring the significant investment opportunities in various fields.

Magdalena Grono, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, highly appreciated the significant outcomes achieved at the Washington meeting regarding the normalization of relations with Armenia and the peace agenda. She highlighted Nakhchivan’s strategic position as a key hub connecting Europe and Asia, noting the strategic importance of implementing large-scale logistics and transportation projects for the region.

The meeting included an exchange of views on the European Union’s support for regional connectivity and the implementation of the transportation corridor.
