Thailand announces state of emergency in Bangkok
The Thai government announced a 60-day state of emergency in Bangkok and parts of nearby provinces Tuesday, media reports said, citing Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung.

The decree will go into effect on Wednesday, dpa reported.

The announcement follows almost 80 days of anti-government protests in the capital that have taken a more violent turn in recent days, with one person dead and almost 70 injured.

Under the emergency decree, security authorities will have expanded powers, and greater immunity from prosecution.
