Mammadov, who is also a human rights activist, made the remarks commenting on the CoE Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland’s decision to cancel the CoE’s participation in the working group.
He said this decision is incompatible with the status of the Council of Europe.
“Jagland should take into account that the Council of Europe is not an NGO and he shouldn’t have taken such an emotional step,” said Mammadov. “It would be better if he has given proposals on continuing partnership in a wider form.”
“He [Jagland] based his decision on that allegedly political prisoners in Azerbaijan are in unbearable conditions,” he said. “What information do they refer to when asserting this?”
The human rights activist also noted that those, who are claimed to be “political prisoners”, state themselves that they don’t face any pressure regarding the detention conditions.
He also said the absence of Jagland’s representative in the working group won’t affect the group’s work and it will further continue its activity.
