"Hobart is developing a worldwide reputation in marine science," Hunt said.
"Conducted by the Marine Biodiversity Hub based in Hobart, the research will take place in Australia`s temperate marine waters and lead to better management and protection of our coastal and marine environments."
There have been 13 shark attacks, one which resulted in a fatality, in New South Wales alone so far in 2015.
In July, Tasmania recorded its first shark attack death in 22 years, after a diver was killed by a great white near Lachlan Island.
