German scientists exploring mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan
German scientists together with Azerbaijani colleagues are exploring mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan.
To this end, experts of MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences of Germany’s University of Bremen arrived in Baku, the public relations department at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences told APA, AzVision.az reports.

Scientific Assistant of Marine Geotechnics Department Gauvain Wiemer, technical department at the department Timo Fleischmann and head of the department of radiometry of the geological environment at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, associate member of ANAS, professor Chingiz Aliyev are carrying out joint field work in Dashgil mud volcano in Alat.

Experts are measuring temperature and porosity in the territory of volcano via modern electronic equipment produced by MARUM.

Aliyev noted that studies with this type of technology have been started since 2004.

“The equipment with more opportunities will conduct monitoring within 24 hours. It will record the changes in temperature and pressure as a result of geodynamic processes occurring in the Earth`s crust. Then the scientist will analyze the data and be able to precisely study ongoing underground processes causing earthquakes,” he added.
