US supports Georgia
Representatives of the US Department of State voiced support for Georgia
“We support the commitment given in Bucharest that Georgia will become a NATO member, and we continue to firmly support its hopes in this direction,” Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken said addressing a meeting with Georgian Foreign Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

NATO countries pledged at the Bucharest Summit in 2008 that Georgia and Ukraine will be accepted to the Alliance in an indefinite future.

Blinken, while speaking about Georgia, did not mention Ukraine.

US Department of State Spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau earlier declined to say whether the US supports Ukraine’s membership in NATO or not.

“The Alliance invites new members based on consensus, when they are ready and able to contribute to the security in the north Atlantic area,” she told reporters.

“Any decision on NATO membership is taken by Ukraine and the Alliance members, and I will not speculate about the country’s readiness until it submits a formal application,” Trudeau added.
