“The Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences has been quite successful over the 70 years; with their research, our scientists have contributed to the development of Azerbaijan, modern technologies have been applied in a wide range of areas thanks to our scientists,” President Ilham Aliyev said Monday in his speech at the general meeting marking the 70th anniversary of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), APA reported.
The head of state said that in the first years of Azerbaijan`s independence the attitude towards ANAS was not that good.
“The then-leadership of Azerbaijan was of the opinion that there was no need for the institution. Only after national leader Heydar Aliyev`s return to power, science and scientists were given the deserved value, and today this area is a priority. In recent years, the material-technical base of the National Academy of Sciences has strengthened, this beautiful building has been renovated, funds have been allocated for the renovation of the buildings of ANAS institutions, a scientific library complex has been created, the Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory has undergone capital repairs, a beautiful building has been constructed for the National Encyclopedia, etc. All these efforts reflect Azerbaijan’s state policy. We want to create better conditions for scientific development. Also, the national strategy and the state program for the development of science were adopted 6 years ago and are being implemented. The Science Development Fund is a very important step in this direction. Because at the expense of this Fund, young scientists will be given grants, research will be conducted, etc. In general, the fund has a positive impact on the development of science,” said the president.
President Ilham Aliyev said that scientists have an important role in the progress of Azerbaijan.
"In the world of new threats and dangers it’s important for every country to rely on its own resources. Azerbaijan, an island of stability, peace, and tranquility, has been trying to reduce its dependence on the oil and gas factor and is achieving it. I do believe that our country will continue to develop in the years ahead. We will try to achieve sustainable economic development in the coming years and we will use our own internal resources in order not to depend on anyone else. I call on our scientists to give their valuable proposals due to the new situation in the world. Our scientists should begin to work on a new strategy for demographic development. Industry and agriculture will ensure our future development. Cooperation in the space industry should deepen further,” said President Ilham Aliyev.
