Issue of Kalbajari hostages to be discussed in United Nations
The fourth periodic report of Azerbaijan on Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was reviewed at the 56th session of the UN Committee against Torture held on November 11-12 in Geneva.
A delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov represented Azerbaijan at the session, the Foreign Ministry told.
Khalafov introduced the fourth periodic report of Azerbaijan. In his speech, he said that our country attaches importance to the cooperation with UN treaty bodies, and gave information about the adoption and implementation and National Action Plan on Protection of Human Rights in Azerbaijan, Action Plan on Combating Trafficking in Human Being and Development Concept “Azerbaijan 2020: Outlook For The Future”.
Stressing that Armenia is lasting military aggression against Azerbaijan, Khalafov assessed the 20 percent of our territories being under occupation of Armenia and its outcomes as obstacles in the fulfillment of Azerbaijan’s commitments in the protection of human rights.
Khalaf Khalafov reminded 4 thousand missed Azerbaijanis as a result of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and told about two Kalbajaris, taken hostage by Armenian servicemen while they were visiting the graves of their ancestors in their historical lands on July, 2014. Now they are illegally detained and subjected various forms of tortures in Armenia.
The committee members praised Azerbaijan’s close cooperation with international organizations, and the report’s envisaging in detail the measures taken for identification of the provisions of the Convention in the legislation, and implementation of the Convention.
