Azerbaijan may ban baby gender determination
The due bill will be put for discussion in Milli Majlis at the summer session in 2016, AzVision.az reports.
According to the statistics of the past five years, there are 112 boys in 100 newborn girls, though the ratio must be 100 to 104, respectively.

For this reason, it is proposed to prohibit selective abortions in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan fixed 27,220 abortions in 2014, with the selective abortions accounting for a bigger part.

Social experts say that selective abortions have a negative impact on demographic indicators. Specialists also speak about the harm that abortions cause to women`s health, which is why the bill on reducing the number of abortions is being considered.
Due to the difficulty to identify selective abortions, the ban may be applied to all abortions.

Deputy chairman of the Committee for Social Policy of Milli Majlis, MP Musa Guliyev, the addition which is proposed to the bill `On protection of reproductive health and family planning` bans the examination related to determination of baby`s gender after a third month of natural pregnancy and selective abortions.

Doctors who undertake such an examination may be brought to criminal responsibility, he said.

"Selective abortions are ordered by parents and this may be his wish. But there are doctors who must be laid responsibility," Guliyev said.

After adoption of the law, those who conduct abortions in case of the absence of threat to mother`s and child`s health will be brought to criminal responsibility.
