"In response to rocket launched at southern Israel this morning, IAF targeted a Hamas post in the Gaza Strip," the IDF posted to its Twitter account late Monday.
The rocket, launched from Gaza, did not cause damage or fatalities, as it landed in an uninhabited area in southern Israel`s Eshkol Regional Council, according to local media reports.
Israel`s latest retaliatory strike is the 20th since the beginning of the year, the IDF said.
In long-standing violence between Israel and Palestine, this most recent wave has seen 85 Palestinians and 11 Israelis killed between 1 October and 16 November, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. At least 9,171 Palestinians and 133 Israelis have been injured in the same period. According to Israel, most of those Palestinians killed in the ongoing violence were responsible for attacks against Israelis.
Palestine seeks the recognition of its independent state on territories in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip — lands occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War.
The Israeli government has so far refused to recognize the State of Palestine as an independent diplomatic entity.
The State of Palestine is recognized by 136 of the 193 UN member states.
