Hungary scolded for claiming European support for 2024 bid
Europe`s Olympic association has scolded Hungary for claiming it has secured the backing of 16 European countries for Budapest`s bid for the 2024 Games.
Hungary`s Olympic Committee said Monday that Budapest had received the support of national Olympic bodies from central and southern Europe. It said the endorsement was confirmed during last week`s European Olympic Committees general assembly in Prague.

The EOC contested the Hungarian statement Tuesday, saying the Olympic committees of central and southern Europe are not an officially recognized organization. The EOC pointed out that the IOC votes by secret ballot for host cities and members are not permitted to publicly state in advance how they will vote.

The EOC says "it is not appropriate to imply that IOC members from the region will follow the guidance from the statement."

Budapest is competing against Paris, Rome, Los Angeles and Hamburg, Germany.
