The situation with the downing of a Russian Su-24 Fencer bomber by Turkey intensifies even more the situation around Syria, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.
“Of course yesterday’s crash of a Russian airplane downed by Turkey makes the situation more intense. We must now do everything so as to avoid an escalation,” Merkel said in the country’s parliament.
“Of course, every country has the right to provide security for its territory, but on the other hand, we understand how tense the overall situation is in Syria and neighboring regions.
Yesterday, I spoke with the Turkish prime minister and asked him to do everything possible to alleviate the situation,” Merkel added.
