Contact between Azerbaijani, Armenian communities of NK is important
Azerbaijan`s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia Herbert Salber on the sidelines of the 22nd OSCE Ministerial Council in Belgrade, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told on Dec.4.

They discussed the negotiations process on the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

The sides noted that the conflict is a major threat to peace and security in the region.

The EU needs to take a firm and unequivocal position regarding the conflict’s settlement in accordance with the principles of international law and the UN Charter, Mammadyarov said.

He went on to add that the illegal presence of Armenian armed forces in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan is the main reason for ceasefire violations and incidents on the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops and along the border between the two countries.

The termination of Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan and the withdrawal of Armenian troops from occupied territories would be an important confidence-building measure, Mammadyarov said, noting the importance of establishing contacts and dialogue between the Azerbaijani and Armenian communities of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Moreover, the sides exchanged views on the prospects of development of relations between Azerbaijan and the EU.
