Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has met with Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China`s National People`s Congress, in Beijing.

Dejiang congratulated President Ilham Aliyev on the victory of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party in the recent parliamentary elections.

He said the Azerbaijani president’s state visit to China is of a great importance, stressing that this visit will contribute to further enhancement of cooperation between the two countries.

China attaches great importance to deepening friendly relations with Azerbaijan, Dejiang said, noting that Azerbaijan is a very important partner of China in the South Caucasus.

Praising Azerbaijan’s support to the principle of “One China”, he added that China also supports the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan.

Dejiang said the two countries actively cooperate within the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and other international organizations. He noted that under President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership Azerbaijan is undergoing rapid development, stability is dominant in the country, and that the development concept “Azerbaijan 2020: Vision into the Future" is being implemented successfully.

President Ilham Aliyev in turn expressed satisfaction with his visit to China, saying this visit will be a crucial stage in the future development of Azerbaijan-China cooperation.

The head of state then thanked Dejiang for congratulation over the New Azerbaijan Party’s victory in the parliamentary elections, noting that the New Azerbaijan Party and the Chinese Communist Party has been closely cooperating with each other for years.

The Azerbaijani president added that Azerbaijan supports the initiative of creating an economic strip along the Old Silk Road, emphasizing the importance of Azerbaijan becoming a transit country in this project.

President Aliyev also said that the two countries successfully cooperate within the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Touching upon the Azerbaijani-Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the president expressed his gratitude for China’s support to the settlement of this problem in compliance with sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

The president also noted that Armenia has not yet fulfilled the decisions and resolutions adopted by the UN in regard to the peaceful settlement of the conflict. President Aliyev said Azerbaijan supports the principle of “One China”, noting that the two countries have similar positions against terrorism and aggressive separatism.

The parties then exchanged views on interparliamentary relations as well as cooperation in the regional, humanitarian, information and communication technologies, agriculture, tourism and other areas.
