Congress not to approve US Helsinki Commission
Congress will not approve the bill of the US Helsinki Commission, acting under Chris Smith’s chairmanship, which seeks sanctions on Azerbaijani officials, Azerbaijani parliament speaker Ogtay Asadov said on Friday.

“I don’t believe that the bill will be approved by Congress. Azerbaijan has enough friends in Congress,” said Asadov.

One of Armenian diaspora leaders in the US, Aram Hamparian, tweeted about his meeting with Chris Smith in this regard, the speaker noted.

“At present, Congressman Smith, who has previously been a member of the Democratic and Republican parties, is one of the activists of the Armenian lobby in the US,” he added.

According to Asadov, some media outlets in Azerbaijan disseminated this information as shocking news. “What`s so shocking here? Imagine that we have created a commission, and someone made such a speech. Smith is an ordinary congressman,” he stressed.

The speaker called on the US ambassador to clarify whether the bill reflects the official position of the US or the position of an individual congressman. “Journalists must address numerous questions to the US ambassador in this regard.”
