Japan considers sanctions against North Korea amid nuclear bomb test claims
Japan will strive for the adoption of a new UN Security Council resolution, considering the possibility of new unilateral sanctions against North Korea over an alleged hydrogen bomb test at the same time, the country`s prime minister said Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Pyongyang claimed it had carried out the first test of a hydrogen bomb.

At an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, Shinzo Abe ordered to consider tough retaliatory measures against North Korea, "including unilateral actions, given the position of the international community," according to the Kyodo news agency.

Earlier in the day, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference that Japanese government might ask the UN Security Council to adopt a new resolution against North Korea that provides for the introduction of economic sanctions.

North Korea declared itself a nuclear power in 2005 and conducted a series of underground nuclear weapon tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013. Pyongyang`s nuclear program has caused deep concern of the international community and prompted the UN Security Council to slap a series of sanctions against the country.

The UN resolutions 1718 and 1814 urge Pyongyang to refrain from nuclear tests and reengage in talks on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
