Armenia, Belarus support peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict
Armenia and Belarus speak for the peaceful settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Deputy Speaker of Armenian National Assembly, co-chair of Armenia-Belarus Inter-parliamentary Cooperation Committee, Edward Sharmazanov said.

He made the remarks following the meeting of the committee in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, Novosti-Armenia reported on Sept.15.

During the meeting, the two sides also emphasized the importance of cooperation at the level of inter-parliamentary assemblies.

“It is well known that we are allies in the Collective Security Treaty Organization and we attach great importance to the peaceful settlement of all conflicts,” Sharmazanov stressed.

The Belarusian co-chair of the inter-parliamentary committee, deputy chairman of the House of Representatives of Belarus National Assembly, Viktor Guminsky, for his part underscored that the developments in Ukraine and in other regions should only be resolved through peaceful negotiations and stressed that parliamentarians should also contribute to this process.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council`s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
