Crucial steps were taken last year towards the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor project, and the Advisory Council held a meeting, during which a concrete program and a joint declaration were adopted, and Azerbaijan’s special role in this area was noted, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Jan.26.
The president made the remarks at the conference dedicated to outcomes of the second year of implementation of the “State Program on socio-economic development of districts of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2014-2018”.
The Southern Gas Corridor is going to open up for Azerbaijan new political, economic, and financial opportunities, he noted.
“This corridor for decades will provide economic benefits and currency inflow to Azerbaijan. Additional measures will be taken this year concerning the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor,” the head of state added.
The president said that Azerbaijan presented itself a transit country in 2015.
“Roads from the North to the South and from the East to the West are through Azerbaijan, a country that is becoming an irreplaceable transport corridor. We have done all this work. Cargos from China, Central Asia and Korea have begun to be sent to Europe over Azerbaijan, and cargos from Europe and Ukraine are being delivered to China over Azerbaijan. If we had not done these works, could Azerbaijan have become a key transit country? Had we not laid the foundation of TANAP along with Turkey, could this project for Europe’s energy security have been possibly today?” said Aliyev.
