Azerbaijan combating religious radical groups - chairman
Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Mubariz Gurbanli on Thursday received Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak Ayeen, the Committee told.

Gurbanli touched on the historical brotherly ties between Azerbaijan and Iran, noting that Heydar Aliyev had played a special role in the development of bilateral relations and that his policy is now being usefully pursued by President Ilham Aliyev.

He said religious ties between the two countries are established at the highest level, mentioning to the guest that state-religion relations in Azerbaijan are perfectly built and different denominations see no discrimination against them. The committee chairman reminded the ambassador that Azerbaijan is displaying to the world an example of tolerance, adding that Azerbaijan is carrying out a serious fight against extremist religious groups and that they have no base in Azerbaijan.

The ambassador noted in turn that friendship and trust between Azerbaijan and Iran will continue to exist, noting that the Iranian side is interested to implement joint projects in organizing mutual visits, in the fight against religious radicalism and extremism. Expressing his gratitude for the frank reception, Pak Ayeen said such meetings will help bilateral ties develop further upward.
