UN praises Azerbaijan
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has received Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Shamshad Akhtar.

During the meeting Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan attaches special importance to cooperation with the UN, its specialized agencies and regional institutions, stressing that such visits are very useful in terms of the future development of relations.

Noting that the development of non-oil sector is one of the priorities of the Azerbaijani government, the FM said there are favorable opportunities for cooperation with the member states in the fields of information and communication technologies and multimodal transport infrastructure and other areas within the framework of the UN’s Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The minister also highlighted the importance of the development of regional relations, which are one of the objectives of the Commission, for Azerbaijan.

“The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and the Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) projects are very important in this regard and the Commission’s support for these projects will open up vast opportunities for comprehensive regional cooperation,” Mammadyarov added.

Executive Director Akhtar, in turn, spoke about the Commission’s relations with Azerbaijan, praising Azerbaijan’s unique experience in socio-economic development.

For a wider presentation of Azerbaijan’s development model on varying regional levels, he invited Azerbaijan to join the Commission’s high-level events scheduled to take place this year.

Furthermore, the sides exchanged views on Azerbaijan-UN relations and projects of regional cooperation as part of the ESCAP.
