Hijab Barbie: New doll exposes internet
Barbie isn
After Mattel announced a line of new body-positive Barbie dolls with diverse figures, some on social media are imagining more ways our plastic counterparts could diversify.

What about a Kurvy Ken and a hijab-wearing doll (“Hijarbie,” if you will)?

“The most important thing with playing with dolls is to see them dressed as we dress,” said Hijarbie creator Haneefah Adam on the phone from Ilorin, Nigeria.

Adam started the account last year, posting images of Barbie dolls in different styles of hijab head covering. “I think it’s important to create a sense of value in Muslim girls.”

The curvier varieties of Ken doll were designed by online fashion portal Lyst in response to the new line of “Fashionista” Barbies. They feature Beach “dad bod” Ken, Bearded Hipster Ken, and Balding Ken, alongside black, Asian and petite Kens.

“Men need plastic role models, too,” said Lyst’s editorial director Katherine Ormerod in a statement.
