Baku hosts First National Model UN Conference
The First National Model United Nations Conference (MilliMUN) kicked off on Feb.20 in Baku within the framework of the joint cooperation between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the UN Development Programme.
The event has been attended by Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov, Education Minister Mikayil Jabbarov, Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfas Garayev, UNDP Resident Representative Ercan Murat and representatives of the diplomatic corps.

Azad Rahimov addressed the conference, said that Azerbaijan’s hosting the 1st National Model UN Conference is a big success. He mentioned that the conference has been organized as part of the joint project "Creating new platforms to support active youth engagement in the global policy debates" between the Azerbaijani government and the UNDP. According to the minister, one of the biggest priorities of Azerbaijan is the support of projects related to education and development of young people, and their decent representation in state institutions. Rahimov said that participants will be informed about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during the conference.

E. Murat said that relevant agencies of the UN and Azerbaijan hold numerous events on youth policy. According to him, not only governments but also the public should be responsible for implementation of UN sustainable development goals.

Garayev said the UN bodies and the ministry have close cooperation: “As a result of Azerbaijan’s membership to and close cooperation with several committees, Gobustan and Icherishher have been included in the world cultural heritage. This means these areas will stay out of threats during any wars”.

The minister noted that Azerbaijan will host an important tourism event on March 4. As a part of the event, the guests will consider Azerbaijan’s tourism opportunities and give relevant recommendations.

M. Jabbarov said in turn that the modern world demands the UN to operate more effective than previous. He noted that participation in the innovative projects like MilliMUN will support development of characters such as team work, and initiative.

Over 350 youth from over 20 universities, academy and schools will attend MilliMUN - the 1st National Model United Nations Conference to be held on February 20-23, 2016 as diplomats.
