More than 6,000 Azerbaijanis taken captive and hostage by Armenia
Investigations revealed that more than 6,000 Azerbaijani citizens were taken captive and hostage by Armenian armed forces, Eldar Samadov, the deputy head of the working group of Azerbaijan`s State Commission on prisoners of war, hostages and missing persons, told reporters on Wednesday.
He said that as many as 1,435 Azerbaijani citizens have been released from the Armenian captivity so far.

“At present, 3,860 Azerbaijani citizens are listed as captives and hostages. The figure includes 3,162 servicemen and 698 civilians including 60 children, 249 women and 303 elderly people,” Samadov added.

Some 68 Azerbaijani citizens have been released from captivity for a large amount of money, according to Samadov. “There are also facts that Azerbaijani citizens held in captivity are involved in the cooperation with the Armenian intelligence agencies through intimidation and blackmail,” he said.

Moreover, 9 Azerbaijani prisoners of war have been sent to a third country unwillingly, he said.

The fate of Azerbaijanis taken hostage and captive in Khojaly is unclear, Ismayil Akhundov, head of the working group of Azerbaijan’s State Commission on prisoners of war, hostages and missing people said.

`Medical examinations of people held in Armenian captivity have found infectious diseases in the captives. Armenia has not discriminated people for their ages and there were hostages in their 80s, even 90s`, he added.
