The President of the Republic of France met Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
The three co-chairs as well as the personal representative of the Presidency of the OSCE, have attended the meeting, AzVision.az reports quoting official website of Élysée Palace.
“The Summit followed the visit by the President of France to the South Caucasus in May of this year. During this visit, the President François Hollande had reaffirmed the commitment of France, as a co-chair of the Minsk Group, to continue the mediation in finding a peaceful solution to this conflict after 20 years, the cease-fire came into the force.
In a context of increasing armed incidents in Nagorno Karabakh this summer which have caused many casualties, including civilians, the Paris Summit allowed the resumption of direct dialogue between the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents. The President of the Republic of France marked the need for an effective decrease in the tension between the two parties in the region.
The Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents have decided to exchange data on missing people at the conflict under the auspices of the ICRC.
François Holland encouraged the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents to intensify their efforts towards a negotiated and continuous settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, in accordance with the principles of international law and the principles identified by the Minsk Group Co-Chairs. He noted that the status quo was not tenable.
He called the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents to demonstrate the necessary political will to overcome their differences and prepare their populations for peace. He proposed to launch drafting a comprehensive peace agreement in order to move forward.
The Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents agreed to continue the dialogue, in the frame of the sitting of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York in September, 2015”, the statement reads.
