Federal police officer Jose Cyrispiniano confirmed that officers at addresses belonging to Silva, including the Instituto Lula, his charity organisation.
Brazil’s O Globo news network broadcast images of police officials around a building they said was Silva’s residence in São Bernardo do Campo, in greater São Paulo.
Cyrispiniano said police were acting on a warrant that would oblige Silva to answer questions as part of the investigation into corruption at the oil company Petrobras.
Police said they were carrying out 44 judicial orders.
