"At dawn today March 7, 2016, in a first assessment, security and national army units killed 21 terrorists and arrested six others. Four people died after synchronized attacks by armed terrorists against security and the national guard sectors and the army barrack in Ben Gardane," the ministry stated.
The clashes began early Monday when militants attacked army, police and National Guard positions in the center of the city. The search for more militants is ongoing, the ministry said.
Tunisia is on security alert after a series of attacks last year in November, when 12 Tunisian security personnel were killed in a suicide attack. President Beji Caid Essebsi said in 2015 that Tunisia was at war with terrorism.
