Armenian provocations are aimed at deliberately aggravating the situation on the contact line of Armenian and Azerbaijani armies, impeding progress in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, maintaining the status quo, which is unsustainable and unacceptable, and continuing the occupation of Azerbaijani territories, Hikmat Hajiyev, spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry told on Friday.
He was commenting on the recent aggravation of the situation on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian armies.
As reported by the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, Azerbaijani armed forces prevented the recent diversion attempts of Armenian armed forces on the contact line of troops in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district on March 10-11, Hajiyev said.
Armenia continues carrying out diversions on the contact line of troops and along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and using heavy mortars, grenade launchers and machine guns to intensively shell Azerbaijani positions, according to the spokesperson.
He went on to add that Armenia, being aware that the Azerbaijani people massively inhabit along the contact line of troops, irresponsibly and deliberately shell the civilians and civil facilities.
The presence of the Armenian armed forces in the occupied Azerbaijani territories is a major obstacle to the resolution of the conflict and the main factor that causes the escalation of tensions and incidents, he stressed.
In order to achieve a lasting solution to the conflict, it’s necessary to ensure unconditional withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories of Azerbaijan, as reflected by the UN Security Council resolutions, and the return of Azerbaijani IDPs to their native lands, Hajiyev said, underlining that Yerevan bears full responsibility for the aggravation of the situation on the contact line of troops.
