"We know we bombed him… we just don’t know if we killed him," Warren stated.
The US airstrike targeting al-Shishani, Warren noted, killed 12 personnel but one individual managed to "limp away" while the Pentagon has seen reports indicating that the Daesh leader may have in fact survived.
"We are looking into it," Warren added. "The bottom line is we are not sure."
On March 4, media reported that the US military might have killed Shishani in a strike near the Syrian town of al-Shaddadi. Al-Shishani, also known as Omar "the Chechen" has been serving as a Daesh commander in Syria.
Daesh is a terrorist group outlawed in Russia and many other countries. The group has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq and seeks to establish a caliphate on territories under its control.
