Armenian youngster arrested for refusing compulsory military service in Nagorno-Karabakh
A court in the separatist regime of Nagorno-Karabakh established in Azerbaijan’s occupied territories sentenced 19-year-old Jehovah`s Witness conscientious objector Artur Avanesyan to 30-month imprisonment for refusing compulsory military service on religious grounds.

Avanesyan, who is being kept in prison in Shusha, lodged an appeal and awaits the next hearing scheduled for November 18, APA reports quoting Forum 18 news service.

The separatist regime reported that he`s a criminal who must pay the price for his crime. His family said Avanesyan, an Armenian citizen, was arrested in Armenia, where he had applied for alternative civilian service, and transfer back to Karabakh was illegal.

Though an alternative military service is allowed in Armenia, the separatist regime stated that a civilian alternative to military service is impossible as long as Karabakh is in a military state.
