The GUAM countries are suffering from the occupation of part of their territories, so we need to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts.

GUAM Secretary General Valeri Chechelashvili told APA while commenting on the recent events happened on the contact line of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.

“Unfortunately, it isn’t only related with the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. Such a situation is observed in similar conflicts. Such conflicts will occur and it will be difficult to solve them, unless fundamental problem are resolved, part of our territories remains under occupation, troops of other countries are illegally deployed there,” he said.

Chechelashvili also mentioned that although there are many similar aspects between the conflicts in the GUAM area, each conflict has its own history and format of settlement.

“GUAM is not involved in the negotiations process conducted within the OSCE Minsk Group on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Geneva talks over the conflicts in Georgia and the "5 + 2" format over the Transnistrian conflict. We have a consistent position regarding peaceful settlement of conflicts. This position is based on the Statement adopted by the heads of states on May 23, 2006 and reflected in the joint draft resolution proposed in the UN General Assembly. Our position is consistent, principled and well-established,” he added.
