PACE welcomes release of Azerbaijani human rights defender
President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europ (PACE) Pedro Agramunt welcomed the decision of Azerbaijan’s Supreme Court to release Azerbaijani ‘Legal Education Society’ head Intigam Aliyev.

“I welcome the release of the human rights defender Intigam Aliyev. It is the right step. The Azerbaijani judiciary has to act always with genuine independence,” Agramunt tweeted March 28.

Supreme Court of Azerbaijan passed a judgement March 28 to release Intigam Aliyev.

The court sentenced Aliyev to a five-year conditional sentence.

The court’s decision was made on the basis of the cassation appeal by Azerbaijani Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov.

Aliyev was arrested on August 8, 2014. He is charged with article 213.1 (tax evasion), 308.2 (abuse of power) and 192.2 (illegal entrepreneurship) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
