A serious political process is needed for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said during a telephone conversation with Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The sides on Tuesday discussed in a phone conversation the latest developments on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told.
Mammadyarov informed Mogherini that several civilians were killed and wounded as a result of intense shelling of Armenian armed forces that targeted populated areas near the contact line.
The main reason for the escalation of tension is the illegal presence of Armenian armed forces in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, the FM said, noting that Armenians troops must withdraw the occupied territories in order to ease tension and achieve progress in the conflict’s settlement.
