Russian FM: A few options remain on negotiation table
It is important to go back to the ideas that have been voiced in the joint statements of the presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia 3-4 years ago, Russian FM Sergei Lavrov said in an interview to TASS.
The diplomat said the negotiations in this regard with the Azerbaijani president are underway, noting that along with political settlement details, measures of confidence building on the contact line are also being considered. According to him, during the talk the issues of exchanging captives and withdrawing snipers from the contact line were also touched upon.

Lavrov said that the main issue at the moment is to make sure no new violence breaks out.

He added that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are working on a document on concrete steps, noting that he believes the current situation will push all the sides involved in peace settlement to carry out these measures.

The Russian minister said that yesterday he discussed the issues during his meeting with the Azerbaijani president, who supported this approach. He stressed that these measures are not intended to perpetuate the status quo, noting that the main purpose is to create a more favorable atmosphere for a political process towards which Russia puts forth its own initiatives apart from the co-chairs’ efforts.

He said that at various times Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev had gives ideas aimed at breaking the deadlock, the ideas which rely not only on the determination of Nagorno-Karabakh’s status but also the liberation of the seven surrounding districts.

“I’m not going to go into details, but there remain a few options on the negotiation table. We’ll continue our efforts,” he said.
