Azerbaijan to suspend state program on education abroad

He made the remarks during a meeting held in Moscow with more than 50 Azerbaijani students studying in Russia as well as some activists of the Azerbaijani Youth Union of Russia (AMOR).

The minister noted that a new format is being prepared for this program, according to which students will be sent to foreign universities for PhD and master studies only. “Also, professors and teachers will be brought from the world’s prestigious universities,” he added.

The minister also spoke about close economic and humanitarian relations between Azerbaijan and Russia, economic and political achievements made in Azerbaijan in recent years, development of education in Russian and other issues.

Answering students’ questions, the minister touched on the issue of the recognition in Azerbaijan of the diplomas of foreign universities.

He said that the legitimacy of some universities’ diplomas is suspicious. “No amendment has been made to the law in this regard. But the diplomas of students are unable to express their thought in Russian after completing their study in Russia will not be confirmed. The only diplomas recognizable in Azerbaijan are those of the universities accredited in their countries. A special office has been created within the ministry for diploma recognition and this process is taking place online,” Jabbarov stressed.

The minister added that about 3,000 foreign citizens study in Azerbaijan and more than a half of them are from China, noting that Azerbaijanis with Russian citizenship are also welcome to study in Azerbaijan.
